Essential Travel Tips

Getting There

Kotoka International Airport (ACC) in Accra is the main entry point. Direct flights from New York (JFK), Washington (IAD), and Atlanta (ATL) are available via Delta, United, and African carriers. Flight time from the US East Coast is approximately 10–12 hours.

Best Time to Visit

November through March is ideal — dry season with lower humidity. December is peak season with the famous Detty December festival season. Avoid April–June (heavy rains). July–September offers a quieter, greener experience.

Visa & Entry

US citizens require a visa. Apply online via the Ghana Immigration Service portal or at the embassy. The e-Visa typically takes 3–5 business days. Ghana also offers a "Right of Abode" for African Americans through the Year of Return legacy program.

Health & Safety

Yellow fever vaccination is required. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended. Ghana is one of West Africa's most stable and welcoming countries. Accra and tourist areas are generally very safe — exercise standard travel awareness.

How Long to Stay

A minimum of 7 days is recommended to experience Accra, Cape Coast, and Kumasi. 14 days allows for a deeper, more meaningful journey including Lake Volta and rural villages. Many diaspora visitors return annually.

Getting Around

Hire a private driver for inter-city travel — comfortable and affordable. Uber operates in Accra. Tro-tros (shared minibuses) are the local way. For Cape Coast and Kumasi, a guided tour package is the most enriching option.
